Traditional Korean Wedding

I recently got some more photos from our traditional Korean wedding so I thought I’d share some.

Two weeks after we had our Australian wedding we flew to Korea for our Korean wedding. Koreans don’t really do big traditional weddings like this anymore, instead most Koreans have a more westernized wedding and may just have a small ceremony after in traditional clothes. We had a wedding company organise our wedding but unfortunately we had no idea what was going on! Also, because this type of wedding is rarely done now, even the older relatives weren’t sure what was supposed to happen!

It ended up being pretty surreal and some points I was terrified. My husband looks so different in these photos as well. They put some horrendous makeup on him and pushed his hair back under the hat. The wedding was in Jinju Castle which is open to the public, so there was a huge crowd of people watching us. The sun was so hot and I remember sitting across from my husband, not being able to move in my hanbok, and worried my makeup was running down my face. My husband looked over me and mouthed, “This is terrible.” I just nodded and tried not to faint. I hadn’t had anything to drink in hours. The wedding seemed to go forever and I had no idea what was going on, but afterwards, especially when I look at the photos I know it was worth it. I can laugh about it now and it was definitely an experience!

i keep putting off my korean wedding that my wife says i “have” to do, weren’t you worried you would get something wrong or not understand what you had to do exactly?

    • http://www.mykoreanhusband.com/ Nic

Yes haha, I did have a friend standing behind me and translating what I had to do though. I don’t think I did anything really wrong. But I do recommend you get someone to explain everything before you do it, don’t do it completely blind like we did. I thought someone would go through it with me, but then realised my husband’s family had no clue as well and in the lead up to our Australian wedding and then doing tourist things with my parents in Korea- there was no time to really sit down and discuss what would happen.

The pictures are beautiful, congratulations for both. I saw the photos with a happy smile on my face. All good things for you two! P.S.: I hope one day I get a traditional Korean wedding too. Hugs! ^^

Beautiful! I think sometimes that the crazier the experience is, the more memorable it becomes. And then you always have a good story to tell ^^~

      haha yes

I was 6 months pregnant when we had our traditional wedding so getting up and down for all the big bows and for “paebak” was really hard! but we had planned the wedding for a good six months and went to preview another wedding so we pretty much knew what was required and how it would be, and it was an amazing day!

    • http://www.mykoreanhusband.com/ Nic

Those big bows were so hard- I can’t even imagine doing it while pregnant!

  • Andre

I think it looks sooo pretty and you don’t even notice from the photos that you don’t know what’s going on. Besides, it’s *your* wedding, I don’t think it matters if it wasn’t 100% perfect traditionally speaking. Besides, the two of you look stunnninggggg in the garments.

Looks pretty amazing. What made you guys decide on doing a traditional korean wedding, esp since most koreans dont even do it.. I guess that made quite an experience in to his own heritage!! The heat and lack of water would have sucked.. but you guys look amazing. Glad you had fun looking back on it even if was hard at the time. I guess this is a symbol of marriage. There will be hard times, but can look back at it with fond memories and no regrets.

I really wanted to acknowledge and respect his culture. Most traditional weddings like this seem to be when it’s a foreigner marrying a Korean these days. I guess because they want that extra emphasis on culture.

You two looked great. And I can see from the smiles on your face you had a lot of fun, even though you say you felt lost :)

I also noticed traditional weddings are only done when a foreigner is involved :)

    • http://www.mykoreanhusband.com/ Nic

Thank you ^_^ If you get married will you have a traditional wedding?

      • http://lovingkorean.wordpress.com/ Oegukeen – Boyfriend in Korea

Wow, you really caught me off-guard there.
I will probably just do whatever he wants. I don’t think it matters much to me :)

Sorry! Yeah weddings always seem to end up being for other people. Like we would have just been happy with our office registry wedding, but families always seem to expect a lot more, which is why we ended up with 3 weddings… quite exhausting really haha.

No need to say sorry, it’s a normal question. I just haven’t thought about it.
            3 weddings! I can imagine. :S

Yeah I think I got some grey hairs from having to organize weddings AND the visa.

sweet story and wonderful wedding :)

I just found out your blog last night and it’s sounds more natural than the others with the same topic, I mean the way you wrote it. You told us just the way it is and yes, some are saying that Korean men are bad. By the way, few months ago I was looking for sample pictures of small, simple and vintage wedding ceremony and after I saw your Australian wedding, I think it’s pretty similar with the one I found. And, I’m Indonesian with Javanese descent…according to our Javanese belief if our face looks the same/similar with our couple it’s mean he/she is the one for you forever, and for me you and your husband looks alike. Oh, and your husband looks like Super Junior Kangin? :)

    • http://www.mykoreanhusband.com/ Nic

Hehe my husband think he doesn’t look like him. Thank you for reading :)

  • Louise Biolchini

What a beautiful wedding! You and your husband make a very cute couple!
