I never knew there was a stereotype. I have always thought Korean people were taller than other asians in general. Not only because of Korean dramas but all the Korean people I've met were tall. Females 165cm+ and males 180cm+. As a grew up in a very tall society and being constantly told how short I am, I was happy to tell people who said all asian are soooo short and tiny, that no not all asian are, Koreans are example tall.

That's so true. I didn't know there was a short stereotype. My university has a large number of Korean graduate exchange students. Most of them I would consider average to tall. I've met some Korean grandparents that were pretty short, but I never stereotyped it as a Korean thing because my grandparents were also shorter than me.

ooh, i've been obsessively reading about north korea recently! i think it's funny and kind of sad that the only thing propping broke, starving north korea up is the fact that its enemy - south korea (and china, but china isn't it's enemy at this point) - are throwing money at it so as to prevent an influx of illiterate, malnourished, socially mal-adapted refugees at its doorstep.

(sorry nichola for rambling lol)

In my family for a female I am tall, I'm 163cm but my older brother is only 170cm and my younger brother is 183cm. Most in my family on my mother's side are very short, around 158cm (for either male or female). They are always jealous of my height, espeically the female relatives as I can wear long boho skirts and maxi dresses that just make them look ridiculous. I don't mind how tall a guy is, I've dated men shorter and taller than me. It's more about the person than the height.

I think it's interesting you can tell between generations when people immigrate to the US. I'm 170 CM and tower over most of my grandparents and aunts (it's too soon to tell with some of my cousins, their so young) and most of the Italian side of my family (even though they were born in the US they were still very poor and could not afford good nutrition) Even on the Dutch side of my family, I am the tallest female yet (so we assume) and I'm almost as tall as the men. Or even between my Older brother and I, he was very picky as a child and wouldn't eat many healthy foods (maybe that plays a part? It could be genes too... I think that plays a certain role in it). We are the same height (my brother and I), and my little sister who grew up less picky is only two CM shorter then me.

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/ask-korean-guys-tall-guys/#comment-17050">Emily Schelley</a>.

It's not only that people starve in North Korea, but people who even have food don't eat very well rounded diets either. They have the calories, but not the nutrition. This affects not only their height but also mental ability. I've heard that it will be a serious problem for an entire generation, and their problems could be passed down to their children. If the North & South ever reunite, this will be, a long with lots of other issues, a big problem that the South will have to take on. I know this isn't the venue for this discussion, but I can't help iiiitttt.

I think this is a common phenomenon in many countries as general nutrition has improved. At many of the historical sites I have visited in the US, you have to watch your head when walking through doors because people were so much shorter when the houses were built. I remember reading that people from North Korea are significantly shorter (~5-8 cm) on average than their South Korean counterparts, probably due to difference in food availability.
