In Brazil when you hear a lot of dogs barking and howling at the same time, my mother says it is an omen of death. As if someone you knew was going to die. The weirdest is that a few days later comes the bad news that really happened.

I grew up on a ranch in what is now Zimbabwe. My father was incredibly superstitious, especially when they were African customs. Don't keep a tortoise in captivity: it won't rain if you do. A balancing rock:don't knock it over unless you want bad luck. Don't give something a different name: something bad will happen to it. Our foreman's teenage son used to watch over me and make sure I didn't get into trouble--but if I did, he'd invent some superstition to lessen my punishment or make a good omen out of it to try and get me off the hook. Sometimes it worked. The rest of the employees on the ranch all chipped in too. What, he shot a go-away bird (grey loerie)? That means the cattle will grow fat. Once when I was about 7 years old I spilled a can of blue paint in the garage. Shoni came to my aid and told my dad that it represented water and it would soon rain (we had suffered four years of drought until then). A week or two later a freak storm moved in deep, spawned from a cyclone off the Mocambique coast and the big dam filled in eight hours--experts had told him that it would take ten outstanding rainy seasons to fill. He never doubted Shoni after that!

Its funny how these superstitions get SO ingrained. I live in Korea now, and once I got caught in the rain, so I ducked into a convenience store to buy an umbrella. When the man who worked there opened it for me inside the store, I nearly had a heart attack.
