We are expecting our second baby!

Yesterday we announced that I am pregnant across social media and we’ve been overwhelmed with so many lovely comments and so much support. Thank you everyone!

It’s very exciting, although can’t wait until morning sickness is gone! It’s also why it’s been hard to make any content lately. But I will film a follow up video answering questions. The best place to leave a question over on YouTube. I’ll be talking about IVF, living in Korea and pregnancy in Korea in the next video.

We had planned to try last year, but obviously with the current state of the world we wanted to delay a bit. We had one embryo left so instead of full IVF, we just needed to do the preparation (the meds) and just one embryo transfer. We are very thankful it worked, as we’d have to start IVF all over again if it didn’t.

I’ll share more about it in coming videos. For now we just wanted to announce it and thank everyone for their support. Yul is very excited to be a big brother!

Our baby has been moving around a lot these days. While it’s so exciting earlier on in the pregnancy, and it’s still amazing now, some nights I do wish he would settle down a bit. Apparently he will soon as he gets too big to move around as much and moves downwards ready for birth.

Hugh will put his face up to my belly and get him to kick his face, a trick that hopefully the baby won’t do later!

Quick video of our baby boy moving. It can be hard to catch him on camera but when we wake up in the morning he can be quite active. He responds to Hugh’s voice as well.

How to compliment your pregnant wife.

At least his made me laugh! We were on our way to do our weekly radio show and even in the morning it’s so hot in Seoul right now. I just feel sweaty and huge in the heat. Perhaps because I was wearing white, Hugh compared me to an angel… but soon made it weird by saying he would ride me if I was!

I can’t wait for summer to be over. I’ve heard older people talk about how summer never used to be this hot (thanks global warming) and it seems like August is the most miserable month. I love summer in Australia, but not Korea. The humidity is the killer here. I’m also glad I’m not in my final month of pregnancy in August. It will be cooler when I’m at the end of the pregnancy.

Since I’m quite large now I’ve been wondering where my stomach actually is.  Mostly I was wondering about my stomach as that’s the organ you are more aware of when not pregnant.There are some gifs and videos online about how the organs move when pregnant and it can be horrifying! I’ve been needing to pee so much lately and when I saw how much the bladder is squished it makes a lot of sense!

I’ve felt okay for most of my pregnancy. But the past few days have been hard in the insane heat and humidity in Seoul. I stay at home most of the time as even getting down the stairs to outside is hard in the heat. I don’t go outside unless I absolutely have to. Can’t wait until summer is over!

The baby has been moving a lot more these days and you can actually see movement while watching my belly carefully. It’s been very exciting for us. But it is a very strange thing being pregnant, and even talking to my friends who are mothers a lot beforehand, nothing really prepares you for it.

If you google about how women’s bodies change during pregnancy you’ll see the gifs and videos and be shocked too! It’s weird not knowing exactly where my organs are. And have a look at what happens to the intestines! Ridiculous!

If you are wondering if I’m prepared for having a baby…. no I’m not. I’ve barely bought anything! At least everyone has been telling me that you don’t need as much stuff as you think. But I can’t believe there will be an actual baby here in November.

Wearing t-shirts while pregnant

I’ve been getting bigger but Hugh as been getting slimmer. Some of our couple t-shirts we have now switched and I’m wearing the large one and he is wearing the small one. At home when I want to be comfortable I often wear one of his t-shirts. Most are too big for him now. I’m generally not fussy about which one I wear but I can’t bring myself to wear his Slytherin t-shirt. I’m a Hufflepuff. (Since Harry Potter is such a world wide phenomenon I don’t think there is any need to explain much about the Hogwarts Houses here).

People are often surprised to know Hugh is a Slytherin as of course he is a lovely guy. But he is ambitious and driven. A Hufflepuff and Slytherin marriage may seem odd but it does work really well. I remember not expecting to be a Hufflepuff when I did the test years ago, but it makes the most sense now. I definitely identify as a Hufflepuff!

Hugh has lost so much weight, and of course I am gaining weight, that we almost weigh the same amount now! He is only a little bit heavier than me. But he may get heavier again as he bulks up. Going from large and extra large t-shirts down to the small size has been amazing for him, although it does leave a lot of too big t-shirts he can’t wear now. I can wear some of them, but there really is too many. The Slytherin t-shirt, and my Hufflepuff t-shirt, were gifts from a fan so it’s a shame his one is too big for him, because it is a great t-shirt.

I just can’t bring myself to wear it…

Morning Sickness

I love vegetables! I usually feel a bit off if I’m not getting enough vegetables every day. I figured that when pregnant that it would be easy to eat well as my diet is usually very healthy. Unfortunately morning sickness hit me hard. By the way, morning sickness can be all day, not just in the morning! My morning sickness was very specific. It was constant nausea, and I couldn’t do any cooking without wanting to throw up, and vegetables looked disgusting to me. Even looking at a vegetable made me feel sick. My healthy eating plan went out the window.

My doctor told Hugh to let me just eat whatever I want to eat, as it’s better that I just eat rather than not eating anything at all. Although Hugh was on a strict diet he was ordering a lot of delivery food for me, which must have been tempting to him. At first I thought my morning sickness was still the symptoms from the hormones I had to be taking, as nausea always came and went while on them. Then one day the nausea just didn’t go away. It stayed all day, and the next day, and the next day. When Hugh called the clinic and asked about it the nurse laughed (good-naturedly) and said it was morning sickness and was completely normal. We had known I was pregnant from day 10 of the pregnancy so I didn’t find out I was pregnant from morning sickness and was hoping I wouldn’t have it. There is something horrible about realising that this feeling won’t be going away for months.

The other difficulty in early pregnancy is that you can’t tell anyone. I already had to turn down a lot of socializing while going through IVF, but at least during those times I could manage the times I knew I’d feel better. With morning sickness it was just constant avoiding doing anything. For morning radio I had to just say I had the flu and that’s why I felt sick. I constantly had a bottle of lemonade with me to calm the nausea and remember being told, just before going live, to move it off the main radio desk (there is a rule about having drinks) and worrying about possibly throwing up with live on radio. Of course I couldn’t tell the producer I needed it because of morning sickness, but thankfully I got through that show without throwing up everywhere.

Thankfully my nausea is now gone and I can eat vegetables again! I did try to get some vegetables down while I had morning sickness. The number one way was to disguise them in Japanese curry, but now I can look at them and cook with them and not feel sick. My morning sickness diet made me gain a lot of weight but now I’m back on a healthy diet and my weight has normalized (plus normal baby weight).
