It's easy to legally change your name in my country, but few people actually do that (except when women get married and change their surnames). As has been mentioned earlier, getting other people to accept your new name is much harder than simply getting a new ID card or a passport with a new name on it! Also, it may turn out to be really troublesome when you have to change every other document that has been issued in your old name.
I, for one, have always liked my name and have no intention of switching it for anything else :-)

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/change-name/#comment-17197">Persephone Basilissa</a>.

I would highly recommend it as it works! :) I was being a bit cheeky but I just got so fed up with being told that I had to have a name I hated imposed on me and I was not allowed to change it that I had to do something to make them see they wouldn't like it if the tables were turned. I hope one day your Mum is called the name she chooses.

Interestingly my hubby had to change his surname legally and that was a piece of cake that took all of two seconds!

My mom has always lived with a similar issue: her name is Jacky Catherine, and her family has always called her "Cathy" because there were already 2 male relatives called "Jacky". But she hates it!
She introduces herself to everyone as "Jacky" and is known that way professionally and to her friends, but her family just won't go along with it. Of course, she didn't try calling them "Cabbage"....

I know people that usually go by their middle name rather than their first and some change their names too if they dislike it enough. I think it would quite a pain to go through that change though.

Its funny because when I was little I did not like my name and wanted it to be Michelle haha. Once I got older I liked my name because I didn't know many people with it but now I see a lot more people with my name. Doesn't help that there are soooo many ways to spell it though :/ lol

I live in the UK and I always hated my name and I hate even more the fact that everybody abbreviated it to a name I liked even less and ignored me when I asked them not to. My Dad really, really wanted me to be called it and so I didn’t want to upset him and change it legally. However, when I got married seven years ago I
decided it was time for a change and so I decided that I would use a different
abbreviation that feels more like something that suits me. So I told everyone and they pretty much unanimously said that I “couldn’t” change my name and I didn’t get to choose what I was called. I said that if it was the case that other people got to choose what you were called then I would call them “Cabbage” until they recognised my name change. It was strange for some of them at first but they took the point and now they all refer to me by my chosen name, with the exception of work who asked me not to change my name in case it confused the clients but I wish I’d stood my ground because I am still called the much hated name at work and it gets confusing. Changing your name legally is easy, it's getting other people to accept it that is the hard thing!
