Oh and as a bilingual kid, I can attest to the WEALTH of opportunities speaking two languages has provided me with. I am forever grateful to my Mexican parents. Lol.
The area in America that I live in has a sizeable Latino population and while some of us have recently immigrated here, many Latinos have been here for decades or as far back as before the U.S. had its civil war. Many Latinos or people with Spanish last names have found that their paternal ancestors have fought in every single American war as Americans. What this means is that most of these people have assimilated to the larger "American culture" and quite literally, know NOTHING about Mexico or their Latin countries of origin. They don't speak Spanish either. Like stated before, this is as a result of natural assimilation AND forced assimilation. For decades, Latino kids were forbidden from speaking Spanish in school and were often physically punished for doing so. So what does this have to do with bilingualism?
Many Latinos no longer speak Spanish and even Latinos who have recently immigrated to the U.S. buy into the "Don't teach your kid Spanish because he will get confused!" and the "This is America so speak American!" stupidness so now I see Mexican parents trying to communicate with their Spanish-deficient kids in broken English. It is really really sad.
My parents spoke to me in Spanish at home while at school I communicated in English. I remember my first day in Kindergarten because I could not understand anything that the kids were saying. But I learned and I've consistently had some of highest English scores in my grade-level because learning how to communicate in two languages and having to switch from one to the other in a flash has sharpened my mind.
It's just interesting how this whole language thing can be so political yet so close to home.
It's awesome that Han and Sophie are trying to raise their adorable child with both of their languages and cultures. As a kid with a slightly different situation, I know that experiencing living in two cultures and speaking two languages has made me a more open-minded and worldly individual.
All the best!

I've noticed that more and more foreigners are becoming "sort-of" celebrities in Korea. Like Sam Otswiri, Sam Hammington, etc.; Non-asian foreigners. For those non-asian people who wish to be part of the Korean music scene ("Kpop Idols" or hiphop artists), this provides a sense of hope that there could someday be less of barrier for them to be part of a girl or boy group. Or even just a musician in Korea.
What is your opinion of this? Do you think there will come a day when there is an anglo or latino member of a kpop group? Do you think Koreans would easily accept this as a part of the growing foreigner population in Korea?
I'm sort of in between. Talking to my Korean pen pals, they told me that they hate prejudice and that since they love music, skin color or nationality is not even concerning to them. Music is music, to use their own words. The one thing they made sure to mention was that they think said non-asian foreigners wishing to be Kpop Idols musy speak Korean VERY well. I agree. But then again, we "foreigners" hear of Chinese members in certain Kpop groups being made to feel unwelcome or less talented than their Korean counterparts. I think Fei of Miss A spoke about this.
With CL debuting in America, I really think she will ignite an interest amongst American and Canadian non-asian kids in the Korean entertainment industry and I truly expect for Korean agencies to have more and more non-asian foreigners auditioning as a result.
It's complicated. Lol.
So what do you guys think? All four of you.

General question: You guys have mentioned "marriage immigrants" before, women who come through marriage agencies to marry farmers. I read an article about a Korean language test that's going to be required for them to enter the country. It seems largely aimed at Southeast Asians in particular, which seems discriminatory, but on the other hand, I can't see marriages that don't have a common language being very successful. Thoughts?

To Sophie and Nichola:
I'll be living with my in-laws to be from September this year, which I'm very much looking forward to! However, the mother wants to go to jimjilbang (and bathe) with me... as much as I'd like to bond, I'd prefer to do so while wearing clothes :E The mother is really excited about going, which makes me hesitant about turning her down. Have you ever experienced this kind of situation, or something similar, with your in-laws, and did you manage to get out of it? Any pro tips on how I could handle this without hurting anyone's feelings? ._.

Does Han feel the need to have Korean friends in Australia and speak Korean? Or is he fine just mingling with "foreigners" all the time? I am British, my husband is Korean and he assures me that he doesn't need to find Korean friends but I can't help but wonder if he needs it. Hmm...
