I was just joking! :D But I'm still on Mr. Gwon's side!! XD
On the other hand I have to say being married to an Indian man sometimes I also get confused at all the unspoken (or otherwise) hierarchy rules! You have no idea how many similarities I find in our situations even though I'm not Australian or my husband Korean! Love this blog! <3

A question: some of my Korean friends (who live in Korea) don't call me my my given name. I understand that to do so is rude, much in the same way as they don't address their wives by their given names and use either a term of endearment or sometimes even as something like Ji-Hoon's Mother (where Ji-Hoon is the eldest son). I make a point of not calling them by their given names, so it is Dr Han, or Pastor Kwan. and so on. However they sometimes drop the Mr. when they greet me, and greet me by my surname only. I highly doubt they are intentionally being rude, but I also understand that to call somebody by their surname is equally rude. So what gives?

I know what you mean, I can see the benefits of this in Korean culture and so sometimes wish for an element of it in Western culture.

I can relate somehow with how Mr.Gwon feels. Im latin and where I come from we are all friendly regardles of age and speak casually with each other but in the end of the day there still is a limit to how much you can say or how much you can play around with someone who is older than you and you should always treat them with respect also. But my younger brother who basically grew up since age 1 in the US and is 8 years younger than me struggles to grasp on to such ideas too. Its ok though every culture is different :) Mr.Gwon does a good job at understanding that

I was telling my friend about this earlier today actually. Sometimes I wish Western culture had more of the respect factor. I'm a junior in university, and a lot of freshmen (I feel) don't show any respect... almost to the point of being rude. I wish they would (but that might just be me wanting to have some power ^^).

It's ok, Mr. Gwon, just kick his ass! :P Just j/k..or maybe not. haha. You could definitely playfully hit him for sure. Anyway, I could tell he really didn't know what to do in this situation, hehe. I guess he'll learn..
