This comment is like two years late so I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but here goes! In Chinese (Singaporean, but same goes for Taiwan and China and probably Hong Kong) culture we have aegyo too, known as sajiao/撒娇. I sometimes employ it with my dad, when I find out I have more month than money left over (still a student). Blatant emotional manipulation, but it works… as you too have discovered 😉

Since I’m stalking your archives (laughing my head off at the same time, hehe), I might as well comment here that I found your posts about the pictures of N Korean civilians and the Korean kid’s book fascinating.

I sometimes do “aegyo” and with my “female dongsaengs” works o.o sometimes with my male dongsaengs friends too but just for fun, but because we´re not in Asia my male friends don´t like that…. I mean dont like that a non-Asian girl does aegyo. mmm I think it´d cute to do aegyo to a korean boy but ,,, I didnt know they don´t like it :/

Cheaky. Occasionally it would seem nice and cute.. But All the time would be so annoying…
I like cutesy though, but as an act for fun, as long as can be serious ect also.

Yeah in general I think Western people see aegyo as something that is really annoying. We don’t have much freedom to act cutesy because once you are an adult it is inappropriate to act that way. Where as in Japan or Korea it is acceptable for grown women to act like that. Also, from what I’ve read, Korea has more emphasis on emotion when reasoning so it makes more sense to try and convince in an emotional way. Aegyo is an emotional action that plays to the emotions of someone. In Western society we would reason in a much more logical, fact driven way, which is why aegyo is unlikely to work. A Western woman would be more likely to ask for something and if it was refused then give good reasons why that thing should be done for her.

So, a Western guy is more likely to see aegyo as whining or moaning.

I don’t usually do ‘aegyo’ but sometimes i want to get somethin from my dad or bf then i do and it works. Lol
I think almost Korean guys like it. But they are saying it depends on how pretty she is.(i hope it was for a joke.)
And I heard Western guys think Asian girls are moaning, complaining. Is it true?
