Hello! I am from Daegu and I’m currently studying in the U.S.
I am actually writing an article introducing Daegu, for our international news blog.
I find this cartoon really interesting and would like to put it in my article.

I know how you feel. I speak vietnamese and there are 3 dialects: southern, northern and central. My parents are from the south so I learnt the southern dialect and when ever I meet some people from the north I always have trouble understanding them. I don’t feel as bad because I have several meet native southern speakers born in Vietnam that have difficulty as well.

That’s how I felt about Korean in general before I learned to speak it myself. Dialects are always a little more grating, So I can totally understand how you must feel. Funny thing is, 99.9% of the time they’re talking about something totally pleasant haha

In reply to Jonathan H Kim. I don't know how strict Nic's family is, but my family is not as strict and I think my in laws would get a kick out of it, haha. I know my husband says it regularly to his parents. Besides, if it's your own family and it's said like a joke, I don't think my family would have a problem with it. Anyway, I said that all in good fun. I appreciate the background information and it's good to know who your audience is first before speaking.

I feel the same way when I sit in the tiny convenience store/bus stop where I teach. Its in a super rural town in Gyeongsangbukdo and when the ahjussi that runs the place is talking to other old people, it can get so intense sounding.

Haha… that would be great if she use that phrase to the younger member of her Korean family, but if her 시어머니 & 시아버지 or any senior member of her Korean family are there, they might take it as some kind of insult.
Because “머라카노?” could also mean “what the hell are you talking about?”. Kinda rude phrase to use to your 시어머니 or 시아버지, isn’t it?
And her family is a typical 경상도 family who lives in country-side. So I doubt that they would take that kind of remark (머라카노? to 시어머니) as a joke like city folks would. You know how 경상도 country folks are like.
And besides, she is 새댁 living in 시댁. She would have to be careful all the time. No matter how kind her Korean 시댁 might be, she’s still 새댁 living in Korea, not in Australia. It’s just a cultural differences that nic has to learn – what is acceptable and what is not in Korean culture. She’ll get used to it. I’m saying this for Nic’s own benefit. : )
