In America, there’s a easy way to figure out if your local Japanese restaurant is run by Japanese vs. Korean or Chinese owners.

If the restaurant has the name “sushi” in the restaurant such as “Kyoto Sushi” than the restaurant is probably owned by non-Japanese but if the Japanese restaurant has a Japanese name that doesn’t include the word sushi in it, such as Senju or Sakura, it’s probably owned by a Japanese proprietor.

That rule of thumb won’t work 100% of the time, but it is spot-on most of the time.

It’s the same here in Canada–and our Korean son, Daniel, feels the same way…he knows that they are Korean, but if they greet him in Japanese he feels he shouldn’t speak Korean to them. So he asks in English. 🙂

And yes, also in Perth–many of the sushi restaurants are staffed by Koreans.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a restaurant run by Japanese folks, to be honest (I’ve never been to a sushi place either though). While at college I’m getting a little better at figuring out if people are from China, Korea or Japan, since there are so many students from Asia as a whole. It’s rather interesting figuring out the differences…

I think here they are run by some Chinese families, lol. I guess the only place you’ll get served by a Japanese person is in Japan. ^^
