It takes a long time before you can actually understand because the grammar is very difficult. Like I can only understand basic sentences because my Korean is beginner. I can read hangul out loud but it doesn't mean I can understand it all unfortunately. I have to rely on translations a lot but being able to read hangul is a good skill to have because it means you can recognise many words and names at least- especially if you visit Korea some time.

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/facebook-likes/#comment-2529">Natalie</a>.

Yeah I think for songs that's okay. The same way non English speakers can sing in English but then not really speak English. It's okay because you are hearing the correct pronunciation in the song. But if you have never heard how a word is pronounced in Korean and are trying to have correct pronunciation just from romanization, it is very difficult because the sounds don't exactly correspond to English.

Well, I think it depends on the romanization, (for example, I've seen yoja and yeoja, pumkuk and pumkyeok) and how much you already know about pronunciation, because that goes along with the accent of the language. Of course, this is only my opinion, as I used this method to teach myself Gangnam Style (only because it annoys my brother when I sing it). For me, if I hear a foreign song, and I have romanized lyrics in front of me, I can pronounce everything pretty much the same way the artist does. Of course, I'm not arguing with relying on romanizations, because you shouldn't, but for me, it's easier to learn the characters when you know how the sounds correspond in English.
