How wonderfully exciting and refreshing! Unfortunately for us, that sort of feeling has long since dried up and blew away a looooong time ago, as there are literally a Starbucks coffee shop in EVERY corner in EVERY town here in the U.S. We've even noticed some places were there are even two or more Starbucks on the same street only just a couple of doors apart! How we miss the "good ol' days", when coffee shops were unique and individual establishments, nestled away in hard to find secret places in the artistically bohemian sections of town. Often filled with all manner of art usually for sale by the actual artists everywhere, with live bands and even more livelier and interesting conversations taking place well into the night. Sighhhh, how we miss those days.

Thank you! Your cultural anthropology work of Korea is so illuminating. I'm a Korean American living in Los Angeles; I left Seoul in 1989; the present day Korea sounds nothing like what I left. In addition, I watch K-dramas; there's always women accompanying men and caressing the men at karaoke rooms; so many questions like, who are they? Where are they from? Why?

I've been to a Cafe Tospia branch in Seoul and it was awful, the coffee was burned and the toast didn't taste like anything... But I hope your Tospia is a bit better! At least it's a nice place to hang out :)

Congrats! How long until you start considering that coffee shop your office? :-) I imagine you could use it to get work done and not have to listen to people chatting or making noise in front of your family's store while you are in the next room trying to work. The coffee shop might start getting noisy too, but it has free wifi, atmosphere and gives you a place to go.

Reading this... i'm pretty sure we have dabangs here as well.
The difference is that it's not a coffee shop but a dodgy bar where older men [think of over 50 years old] go to spend time and drink cheap alcohol. They might serve some coffee and maybe non-fancy cappuccinos too, but i wouldn't know as i don't dare go inside.
The places are quite spooky to some point and i don't think they would hire women- it would be too dangerous. I have one some 100 meters away from my building [i pass by it everyday on my way to the supermarket and i cant really avoid it].. I believe it has video surveillance, and i also noticed a window around the bar area - with a little opening to serve the drinks and take the money through. Prostitution is illegal here, but of course you can find prostitutes if you know where to look for them, lol.

Sometimes i joke around with my flatmate that if i don't return by midnight, that's where they'll find me for sure. LMAO [the place closes at 9pm i believe] well, the joke is funnier face-to-face, hahaha

Can you write a blog entry/ video something... about Korean bath houses [if you've been to any].. or hot springs...? for the longest time i couldn't remember the request though i was thinking about it for some time. :P I know i read all your blog and i don't remember ever seeing something like that.
