I used to only drink coffee from small family owned cafes and Americanos were on the menu. It is a watered down Espresso, suposedly totally different than a regular coffee. And yes, you would ask for an Americano, b/c life was simple then and saying "can I get an Expresso with water please" was a waist of air. Of course those cute cafes are now obsolete, and I too have succumbed to the Starbuck kingdom and their specialty ordering system.

There is actually a study on different personalities in bi-lingual
people, it's a very interesting thing... But I guess it has a lot to do

An "Americano" in the US is just "coffee" or "black coffee" or "coffee, black". An iced Americano is just an iced coffee or an "iced black coffee" if you want to be specific.

Like: "I'd like a large coffee, please." OR "Could I get a small black coffee?"

Starbucks and other coffee shops have different roasts or blends, so sometimes you can specify which roast you want: "I'd like a venti holiday blend, black, please."
