I like the last paragraph of this article a lot as it in part does reflect some things about me. I am a Korean born and raised in Europe but, grown with two parents who were very rigid on teaching and respecting determined korean values (even though they are pretty unconventional and live a life like hermits and at times criticize European's easygoing lifestyle and habits) who even if there's now a set of Korean communities has never frequented it and when I go to Seoul for some business, I've always avoided dating korean girls even if at present I'm getting pressured a bit to marry one of good family and from time to time my parents present me with some korean girl they find compatible (also due to her family background and education) and that they like but, I have like always ignored them. I never had many friends due also to some racial aspects but, had in past had some very supportive girlfriends. At present after a long break from relationships I've finally met after almost having lost hope for a set of lucky coincidences and circumstances... my soulmate whose not Korean nor Asian but, a Western girl and it's not that we were aiming both to fall in love but, it occurred and we're both so immensely happy with the feeling we cannot live without each other and that if she's not happy, I'll feel miserable but, it's most due to the fact I've never in my life felt such tenderness within me, to feel so sentimental and utterly romantic with nobody ever. There are a lot of obstacles which lie ahead of us one of them being my parents who might find it really hard in accepting this situation being very traditional types and my love too feels pretty anxious at the perspective they might not approve or like her but, I'll expect too some scepticism from at least her dad and some relatives on her side too as let's state they expect her to be married with a white guy too. So I did not find what best matched for me but, I found true love and my soulmate. Thanks Nic for this wonderful site and wish to you and Mr. Gwon the best. : 3

if there are dudes in korea who are looking to travel and do more different things, there must be chicks in Korea wanting to do it too. But I guess there could be more folks like that in UK & the products of English colonies, so you gotta a better chance of finding someone. I have to say though, I think the US may be all like, "Be yourself!" but we are generally quite pedestrian when it comes to travel and learning foreign languages. And often the end of the "be yourself" slogan is "buy Nike! Eat McDonalds! Get a MacBook!" so I'm not sure how individualistic we really are... United States of Advertising! A different type of mind control! I'm bitter. Must end internet time now.

Although I'm Korean, I found it hard to get along with Korean girls or guys in Korea because a lot of them do have that community mindset, and conform to whatever is popular or normal in society. I'm glad to hear that there are some guys out there that want to break away from usual "Korean" mindset.

I haven't lived in Korea in a while, so I think you can answer this question better than I can. Do you think that culture in Korea is going more towards individuality or do you think people still feel pressured to fit in and conform?

It's funny how much people can change from school. I know friends of mine expected me to backpack across Europe and never come back to the US, and I'm the first of them to get married and settle down and just "grow up" in a sense. I'm sure his friends are proud of him, but they're like "woah, totally different from when we knew him!" Mr. Gwon has come a long way, and it's impressive, especially to people who never knew him that way. :) I also understand wanting a foreign wife because of the cultural differences. I hope he finds someone to match him. :) I hope to travel with my husband before we completely settle down, we both want to travel and see the beauty of the world, but our first stop will be in South Korea. We want to see the big cities, but mostly we want to stay rural, as that's where we want to live and raise a family. :)

Yes I bet Mr Gwon's friend was very surprised to know all that had gone on since they last saw each other. I think it is good that he got to do all those things, things that people didn't expect of him. I have decided after rarely leaving my country (I am in the UK and have only ever been to Germany and a Spanish Island outside of it) that now that my daughter is grown and soon to be off to university I am going to learn new things, re-learn things I have let slip for many years and travel more. I really want to travel all over Asia, staring in China first as it's one place I really want to go and I want to go by myself (on a very safe organised tour of course, I don't think I would want to back-pack around by myself). It may take time to save up for my travels but it will be something to look forward to (though I have promised my daughter that I won't go to South Korea without her). I see so many people like me in this country that have just done nothing much to expand their horizons and I don't want to be like that anymore.

In the Netherlands you will see Dutch men and women date each other but there's also a part of the men and the women whom won't start a relationship with someone that's Dutch.

I'm Dutch live in the eastern part of the Netherlands and you have all kind of men but there's one kind of Dutch men I just can't stand. Like everything I hate that kind of Dutch men will do it and he doesn't give a damn about it. But if you stay with a guy like that for just one year you will become pretty hard to the outside world.

If I ever need to describe a man like that I would start with the accent like they don't speak Dutch not at all they speak with a dialect. And they listen to Dutch pirate music. Like from all Dutch music why that. T_T one minute and you run away from it. I just can't stand the mexico part from that one Dutch song. But this is just the start because here begins the part where it just makes it too bad. The guy is first of all pretty rude and really watch out with what your saying thay think in a third demension. Like don't eat cumcumbers or anything anymore in front of them because they will say something about it and no not in a quiet voice but in a loud voice so that everyone in the room can hear it. But if you want to make them quiet always always make sure that you as a girl has the last word. Yes you even need to watch out with what your saying.
And it's not just this ever thought about how it's like to go on a vacation with a guy like that well they will be loud. When they wake up they start there day with beer and pizza or anything there is. On the street they will be loud really loud like some cows in the field.
And the most surprising thing is I live in a part of the Netherlands where you have so many guys like that.
I learned from those men too always have the last word too talk in a different way and even eat in a different way.
