I feel you, I feel you.
I'm from the US, the husband is from Thailand, super different indeed. I know I have felt that little ping, like you, when I make a cultural reference and he doesn't catch it, but all in all it doesn't really bother me. I enjoy getting to tell the hubby about my childhood, how it was different from him. Indeed like Jess mentioned, it's enjoyable getting to show the hubby a show I watched as a kid especially when he ends up liking it. Oh oh, like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, we've been making our way through that series. Love that show. =D
I heart LOTR too! The hubby really enjoys it too, but he's not as skilled at watching it over and over...he's cool with watching it a few times per year. Pssh, not enough for me.

I've noticed even my cousin living across the street and I have different memories and favorite children shows, so no wonder that people living the other side of the globe have different references too...:))

Yeah that would be hard. I get it a bit with elizabeth in that she grew up watching very minimal and selective tv. And doesnt watch that many movies, and hasnt seen many older ones... So a lot of things are totally missed...

However there are lots of things she and her sisters have seen that they can quote from start to end that i've either not seen/not been interested in, or dont remember in the same uncanny level of details...

I run into these things with my boyfriend as well. We both love different cultures so we don't see it as a barrier, but another way to find something new about the other person. Even years down the road we can still discover and learn from each other. :) Though I LOVE LoTR as well so I definitely understand not being able to share the love of the Middle Earth world. :)
