This is probably the #1 thing that annoys me about my boyfriend when we're with his parents or friends that can't speak English. I will ask him to translate something for me and his answer is super short and usually something that I'm capable of saying in Korean by myself. If I ask him to translate something, it's because I don't know how to say what I want to say!!!! GAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Oh man, my husband is like a combination of your husband and your brother. When he translates stuff, he translates it as short as possible AND he'll purposely twist the meaning around. I wanted him to tell his mom that I appreciate her cooking and it's all delicious, and he'll say something like "[she said] thanks but it tastes bad." and then I wind up just telling her myself in broken Korean.

I'm not good at translating between my mother tongues, mainly because my mind insists on translating it as perfect and literal as possible, with an explanation as to the actual meaning after giving the literal one (this generally confuses people). Also, since both languages are natural to me, I'm used to mixing them, especially when I can't remember a certain word in one language, and I'm not practised in translating between them in my brain. I'm not like your husband though (however I would obviously not be literal in that situation since there is no way I could memorize what you guys said word by word).
I'm sad I didn't learn another language when I had the chance. I would know 4 languages with Korean, which I am determined to learn soon!
Hehe although I probably would do what your brother did to you to my sister! ^^

Lol, some times boys are just plain terrible.. And make stuff up when lazy.... And well, being your brother and all lol

If you want him to help you with your korean more, keep trying to talk to him in korean, and just keep at it, even if it is especially bad, that way he will help you or it will drive him nuts eventually.

Keep at the good work.

Wow this really funny. Sorry. But I'm like that too. When am I just translating suppressing things up. It seems that when I speak false, does not seem sincere. Even if it is what the person said LoL

I completely understand your husband. I am kinda "bilingual" (my english is stronger than my mother tongue) and I can understand a little bit of a few languages spoken in South Africa. Translating back and forth can be challenging especially when you lose the true essence of what has been said when translating to another language.
Anyway continue to soldier with learning Korean!
