This made me laugh. Specifically because my friends did the opposite to me on my birthday. They kept calling "one shots" and making me drink, and I didn't find out until later that the rest of them had switched to water! Jerks. haha.

I just found your blog through Falco's blog, and I'm so glad I did! Your posts are too cute and sweet, and your comics are awesome! Added to my Reader and I look forward to seeing more! ^_^

Oh one more important fact about drinking with Koreans. The more senior (older) you are, the higher your glass is raised (I think this has more to do with beer glasses, but I think it still applies for soju). My relatives pointed this out to me on New Year's.

There are a lot of cultural reasons for it that I'll explore in a future post as well.

Also something that may help if you don't drink at all. Find out what non alcoholic drink you like best. For example I really like the strawberry or banana milks that are available at every convenience store. One time in Korea when we went out with my husband's friends he explained to his friends that I wouldn't be drinking that night but I really liked those drinks, if they want to buy them for me. So they did. It meant I was drinking along with them and participating in the "cheers!"... just not alcohol.

What a nice! Oh, what I mean is nice tip and post Nic! I'm really learning a lot from your blog.

This may be difficult for me if I go to Korea because I don't drink alcohol at all. Hmmm, I wonder what's the reason why they are big drinkers? I'll just wait for your next post about that. But since saying "I'm on medication and there is no way I can drink" proved it works, that might be the phrase I would always use when I'll go there keke.

Good advice on how to survive in a drinking culture.
It is much the same in Japan, you are expected to drink. If you refuse, it will ruin the night.
My advice is to have something in your stomach before drinking, it slows down the alcohol intake. Also generally if your not asian you can take a higher amount of alcohol before you start to feel effects. But don't count on this, they are well practiced at drinking.
Ordering your own drink works well, allowing you to drink at your own pace.
In Japan I found a good tactic was to order everyone a round of hard liquor, straight rum or whiskey The Japanese don't like the strong taste of alcohol, so a drink like whiskey they find hard to drink, and will slow them down. But they will respect you for drinking such a strong drink.
Of course the last tip only works if you yourself can take straight liquor.
