Well, If you're ever up in Uijeongbu, I have a sofa you can relax on ^^

It was one of the major investments The Hubs and I made when we moved to our new apartment. We both really missed having one when we lived with his mom. Now we spend most of our time on it haha

Its how people can live in tiny one-rooms. My one-room was tiny. My little tiny dining table folded up and got tucked in next to the fridge, and my sleeping mat (요) and blankets got folded up and stuffed in the wardrobe every morning. Otherwise, I dont think i could have ever seen my floor. haha.

I'd like to say it's cultural, generational and system of furniture industry difference.
First, As you know, almost every room in South Korean home has ON-DOL(floor heating system), not like other countries which have limited floor heating system(ex, bathroom floor heating). So usually the old generations prefer sleeping on the floor to sleeping on the bed. And for them, a bed is inconvenient, uncomfortable, inefficient(wasting space and not warm enough in the winter) and dirty(cos it's difficult to clean up or wash).
And also they don't like to put western style furniture in the house. Korean traditional furniture is difficult to find in nowadays and even if it's available, you have to pay lot. So you can say they have less furniture in the house comparing to the younger generations. And of course, the old generation in country side has more modest life style as well. They think extravagance or heavy spending is sin(morally wrong). So although they have more than enough money to buy what they want, they try not to use and try to money unless it's really important . I think that's a big difference between north east(far east) Asia and Western world. You can't know who is rich or poor from their spending in far east Asia(Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong-kong, Singapore). Normally, far east Asians looks poorer than similar income level's western but they are financially more sound than westerns.
Lastly, South Korea has different furniture distribution network from other countries. When people buy new home or move to other place in South Korea. Usually, people give interior construction(yes!, it's kind construction. they change everything inside home form the kitchen to the veranda) to contract company. Then the company orders new furniture for the new interior. So furniture is part of interior scheme(theme) and a custom fit with the interior in South Korea. Most of furniture sale is done by B2B(business to business) For that reason, end users(normal home owners) are little bit hard to find reasonable price furniture.
But you could buy furniture at the big shopping mall like Home plus or department store when it is on sale season, if you don't like to buy it from online shopping.

Great advice! Hugh has been using facebook groups to meet new people in our area lately, so that sounds like a good way of getting cheaper furniture.
