I don’t think I’ve ever jaywalked in heavy traffic, it freaks me out. In this example Hugh just did it in our suburb, so almost no traffic at all.

Actually worse than jaywalking is people with earphones in constantly I think and then not paying attention to the traffic. I think there is something about if as a pedestrian, if you cause an accident and you have earphones in… you get possibly get fined or in some sort of trouble. I never walk around with earphones anymore.

In sydney there are so many crossings and they are triggered quite regularly.
With so much traffic – and what Jess said about them nearly getting hit – it still freaks drivers out, and can cause cars to have accidents with each other as much as the pedestrian and will have effects on all involved.

Admittedly I do jaywalk most of the time, however NOT in heavy traffic, nor when my crossing would interrupt traffic or put me at risk. And i think that is the main point.They only really enforce it when bored, or the person is really putting themselves and motorists at risk.

It varies from state to state, but I know in Minnesota (where I used to live), it can be as much as 100 USD, though it can be less, depending on what the law enforcement involved decide.

$66 dollars I think. It drew criticism because really there are better things the police can be doing. They fined like 80 people in a short time which is overkill really.
