My husband was born in Korea but was adopted to the United States as his father’s family would not allow his mother to marry into the family after she got pregnant even though they were both adults at the time. His mom’s education level seemed to be part of the problem to his father’s family as well. I am sure that this was a hard decision for her and it breaks my heart that these issues still exist. Ironically the couple that adopted him in the States was broken apart by an affair and he was raised by a single mother anyways. I am glad to hear that this stigma is starting to change even if it is a slow transition. My husband really wants to learn more about his Korean family but is scared to look because he does not want to cause trouble for his mother if she was able to move on and marry. I hope that one day he will have the courage to look for her, even if he never meets her I think it would give him a lot of closure on the whole situation. He is a westerner now, but he has a huge amount of pride in Korea and his heritage. We are trying to learn the language and culture so that we can pass it down to our children one day. We love your blog so thanks for all the hard work that you two do!

You know what I find so interesting. Most of the “international” “Mixed” couples that I know who are happily married or dating never expected to end up with the person they did. They never went hunting for a certain “type” of person. I wish this was something that the young girls who have their hearts and heads filled with the idea of meeting mr kdrama and living happily ever after could understand.

Such a needed discussion!

It is soo sad to hear of the girls being left to single motherhood without a clue, but this was bound to happen. As a single mom myself, it breaks my heart, yet l have to agree with the earlier commenter; these girls are naive and seeking the fairytale. Yes, I have sighed at the end of a good drama and wished for the fairytale… then my kids cry they are hungry…lol A fairytale is all those dramas are. My family is a mesh of so many cultures and races, so I grew up with a love, respect, and understanding of the eastern world while raised as a westerner. This is prob why I love Kdramas so much.

I really like how you both are very clear that international relationships take work and probably some education. There are more than just language barriers, there are cultural ones as well. The eastern work environment freaks me out!

Thank you for shedding light on this topic. I hope your blog reaches future young girls seeking, and gives them an education on real life, and maybe they can enter their relationships with wisdom.

I feel like these situations (online dating/ dating a foreigner in your country) should be approached with common sense. Guys are guys no matter what country they’re from. I suspect that many of the girls facing these problems are young and inexperienced and, like Nichola said, are viewing the world with rose-colored glasses. They are blinded by the image set up by K-dramas and expect a fairy-tale ending without thinking rationally. :-/
