Hwaiting! I just gained myself a Korean tutor as well as I'll be heading to Korea...I very much understand about language learning. It's really hard to speak when everyone speaks to you in English! And writes to you in English! I had that problem learning French. French people wanted to practice English - I wanted to practice French! Any who, you'll get on famously!

I'm on the other side of the fence as I'm an ESL teacher here in Melbourne. Using the language as much as possible is the best way to make progress - I'm sure my Korean would improve much more quickly if I were in an immersion programme ;) By the way (although I'm sure you know), there are lots of free Korean-language materials available online (e.g. Talk To Me In Korean, Arirang's 'Let's Speak Korean' and Monash University's 'My Korean' books and MP3s).

I feel you, I took French during my undergrad years and was really interested in becoming fluent but then...I couldn't really take any more French classes (it wouldn't match up with my curriculum) and I had no one to practice with either. When you're busy dealing with daily life, there really isn't much time to dedicate to learning a language. Right now I've forgotten most of it :( The class was quite funny though, our book was in English, the professor taught in Spanish and we were learning French. If someone happened to walk into the classroom they would have heard a mixture of the three hahaha

I don't think it's widely known and could depend on individual multicultural family centres. For example, I qualify to get a home tutor here in the countryside, but a friend who lived in a city area only had access to a class.

I feel your pain!!! After living in Korea for over 2 years, being married to a Korean for almost 15 and having gone to Korean school / tutoring for 4 years, my Korean is terrible!!!! I often think I have the communication skills of a two year old.. but even that at times is being generous. We just warn the kids that they better learn Korean better than mommy because when we are old and my husband reverts to his mother tongue, they will need to translate! :)

I sometimes pity people who grew up in english speaking countries.. after all, everyone else HAS to learn english as a 2nd language... And I'm always confused when I read that someone only speaks one language.. because it's SO normal to speak at least two.. I'm German and had english classes since 2000 I think? I also kinda had spanish in school for 4 years but since I never needed it and never will.. I just memorized what I needed for the tests and forgot everything after the final exam.. ^^; And now I'm studying Korean in my 4th semester~

I'm kind of jelly.. because you're basically in the best environment + have a personal tutor.. if your husband decided to just speak in korean with you, you would develop phenomenally fast in a very very short time. ;_; I just use Korean when meeting my 2 speaking / practice partner and in class...

Anyways, GOOD LUCK! :D
