I’ve always liked the sound of SeolBi. I think it’s really pretty and similar to my own what with the two syllable sounds of S and B being the same in both languages :).

Lol, My Passport is wrong too, and I was an American writing an American application! My middle name has two Capital letters (LeeEtta), so everyone wants to make it into two words. I wrote it correctly on the Application, but the Government changed it on my official passport. Now I live in China, where everything has to be done according to your “Passport” name–include Bank Accounts, Visas, etc. So they keep correcting me and changing all my official paperwork to the wrong passport name. It’s been a hassle, but rather funny. I also tried getting a Chinese name, but after my Chinese students and friends discussed it they decided my English name and meaning was the best. So they just translated it into a really long Chinese name with characters that mean beautiful, wise, protector or peace-bringer, and pretty young woman. I love the sentiment, the memory, and the name–but a lot of Chinese think it’s a little strange because it has too many characters for a traditional Chinese name (4 in just my given-name!)

Hah! I have a Yoyo too 🙂 Except it’s a girl. And Lotus (boy), Swallow, Sunflower, Cloud, Apple, Caroline (Boy), Sunny, Anan (his English name?–still don’t know where that came from), Kiki (boy, keeps trying to answer to Cici), Alisa, and Akimio (English name). It’s always fun to see what they come up with. 😛

I would like to tell you one thing as a native Korean having lived in Denmark and Italy. I understood your husband’s name is 순홍. I think he scripted his name in “English” well instead of Soon-hong. There is no reason to follow American’s pronunciation rule or habit. More internationally, ‘u’ is better for ‘ㅜ’ or the ‘oo’ sound on ‘soon’ in English because writing his name in Alphabet doesn’t mean writing in English American or British, but writing in Roman Alphabet. Also I read Sun-hong as “soon-hong (English way)” immediately. The English or Americans would pronounce “Sun-” as the solar “sun”, but it’s their problem. In Europe people would read “soon” as 손 or so-on or confused. When I came to Europe to study, also I had the same difficulty for my name. I chose one English name. Now that I had lived in Europe a while and realized, I regret that I am called that name by some people. I am not English or American or Australian or NZer or Malta.

My English name is Billie. I have a friend from Japan who came and stayed here in the US for awhile and sometimes my name would sound a little strange/cute when pronounced with her accent. So while I was watching ‘The Blade and Petal’ and the main character changed her name to 무영 (moo-young) since it meant shadow-less. I instantly fell in love with it. So I always use 주무영 (Joo Mooyoung) as my Korean name.
