Actually, looking back, I realize I've been subtly using aegyo for years with my husband. Though I'm usually very direct and forthright, sometimes we have our lovey dovey moments and I say "honey (or sweeeetie)! let's do this..." or something like that. He likes it on the occasions when I am cutesy. But this isn't an everyday occurrence. Both my husband and I are white Americans and we were this way long before I knew much about Korean culture.
Though 'aegyo' isn't really accepted in western culture, I do see it on occasion used by some people here. For example, way back in high school (I'm getting old!) I knew girls who were cute without even realizing they were that way. It's all about letting your natural cuteness come forth - at the appropriate times of course.

I think the whole concept of aegyo is strange, from my personal point of view. As a western woman, I suppose it kind of... the thought of having to whiningly beg for something seems to me to be demeaning?
Although I know I'm guilty of sort of doing it to my dad.. but I know I'm joking, and so does he. (eg. You're the best ice cream scooper in the world, daddy) I think it would be ... strange to have to do that to an equal to get him to pay for some water?

l loved this vid!
I am new to Korean culture, barely a year of watching dramas, vlogs and reading blogs, but not new to other Eastern cultures. I have been wondering about this aegyo, which I am glad to have a name for :)
This video explains it so well, thank you. Aegyo did puzzle me at first, when drama characters were portrayed older than teenagers, but quickly it grew on me. I never thought of myself as a "westerner" b/c I have always been exposed to Eastern cultures, but after this explanation, I realize I totally think like a westerner.
I have noticed the aegyo more in the LaLa vlogs.. the first thing I thought was, "you will make a good mom -so sweet." It is a breath of fresh air to see married couples be cutesie and respectfully playful with each other.
This vid made me think how I used to be playful and had some natural aegyo before I became a mom, but single motherhood has made me too stern and emotionless -how sad.
The more I learn of the Korean culture, the more I love it!
I think I will encourage my daughter when she shows aegyo :D

Hahaha I'm the same with J! I don't like aegyo at all when I first know about it in the Korean culture. I cringe and didn't understand the video about the girl Hyeri as well. But J always make me do aegyo and he reckons he only speaks to me in Korean because I sound too strict when I speak English and cuter when I speak Korean. I totally understand you haha. Great video!

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/lets-talk-about-aegyo/#comment-18900">Kayty</a>.

It's the same in my family too :) In my family we use a lot of aegyo--even my teenage brother! He will be all Mr. Cool outside of the home but cute at home. I think it's nice and special that he does that to his noona :) But I don't think aegyo is much of a thing in Indian culture in general.

Also it's my first time commenting! I love your blog and follow it daily :)

I love the aegyo in Korea. I have always hated the fact that it was looked down upon in my country, because by the time your a certain age you expected to act, like, and dress a certain way; no more cute things for you because it is considered immature and childish.
I personally have a little bit of natural aegyo. Form the time I was little whenever I wanted something even if it was simple like going for a walk or playing a board game, I would use aegyo; My mom and dad would often laugh.
In my home it feels more acceptable but if I were to do it in public people would probably think I am something along the line of a spoiled brat.
