American DMVs are the worst. Everyone has an attitude. It may have something to do with the fact that the DMVs in my hometown are nearly all in the ghetto though….

I was so shocked when I got my Korean drivers license at how unbelievably sunny and kind the people at the DMV were. I actually wanted to sing and skip my way out when I left because my expectations were so well exceeded.

In reply to Ddong Man. I think Text DMV employees derive their pleasure from making everyone with a drivers license photo look like a prison inmate. It is like a consolation prize for staying at a job you hate.

I am Korean living in France with French husband, and I do think that almost everyone working in public service area in France are RACISTS !!
By the way, I really enjoy visiting ur blog and share ur story with my hubby, because we have many similar situations due to our cultural difference, but the other way around… ^___^

There must be a universal rule that all employees at a Driver’s License/ Identification offices must be grumpy. It’s the same in the states. But I tend to try to go to the guys in the offices they seem to be a little less grumpy.

Sooooo true! In all my years of driving, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a “nice” or “friendly” Texas DMV worker. I look like “Brunhilda, the angry prison guard” in my latest driver’s license because of a similar situation to Mr. Gwon’s.

Same thing happened to my (Korean) husband in Perth….I think the rudeness is a prerequisite for that job! He also asks the racism question in that sort of situation, but mostly it is just plain rudeness
