My mom had us kids always enter at least two baking things in the county fair from kindergarten on up. I might not be able to bake many things but I've got biscuits, cornbread, and chocolate chip cookies down. Baking does seem to be more of a western culture thing.

Yeah, my Chinese-American guy is a fiend for my cookies and cakes, which surprised me. He didn't grow up with a lot of sweets in the house. His favorite? The Devil's Food cake with poured ganache frosting that takes 6 hours to make. I must really love him.

I remember making homemade soft pretzels (any shape we wanted) and cutting out animal cookies when I was 7 or 8 years old. I've been baking ever since. What does he think of no-bake cookies? Maybe you could make those sometimes?

Solution: Mail-order a counter-top electric oven, teach Hugh a basic cookie recipe, and direct him to a creative baking page. Then when he wants cookies all to himself, he can make them himself.
(I highly recommend a chocolate chip cookie with a bit of brewed espresso in the dough.)

Yeah, my mother and grandma both taught me to cook foods and bake sweets. Whenever we grandkids return home for the Holiday, the oldest girls have to cook the food. Its really fun. I get picked on for cooking boxed meals, but I do know how to burn a good meal when asked. Baking cakes and cookies in my house of five don't last long at all. I have to put a minimum on how many they are allowed to eat per day. Just the other week I made brownies and the kids were licking and eating out of the bowl. Sone things never change.

I've been cooking and baking since I was a little kid. I'm the oldest of six kids and mom needed help cooking for all of us. She was afraid of deep fat frying stuff with the kids around and she would banish us from the kitchen when she made corn fritters.

Then when I was a girl scout, there was a badge you could earn for cooking.

I still don't know how to deep fat fry.
