I think part of the problem is the difference between US and Asian handsomeness standards.

When Lost was on my wife’s white friends were gushing about how attractive Daniel Dae Kim is. Her Korean friends were complaining that the producers had picked such an ugly guy as the Korean. Quote, “He looks like a farmer!”

I had the biggest crush on Shang as a kid. Ok, fine, I still do. The thought of a live action version so I could have a crush on a non-animated character…there may have been squeels of excitement. But that excitement will quickly be killed if the casting is white-washed. Or if Michael Bay directs it. Do you hear me, Disney? Godfrey Gao for Shang and Puff Gao for Mulan.

Umm, I hear the phrase “Mulan live action” and I expect the ENTIRE cast to be chinese O_o It would be so weird otherwise.

Well, Scarlett Johansson is to play a character named “Makoto Kusanagi” for Ghost in The Shell live action. Enough said, no? I agree it is particularly bad for Asian men in the media, but there’s a lack of representation of Asian people in general. It’s stupid, they’re really missing out on some big markets (if you want to make it just about money, because let’s face it, they care nothing about making a difference.)

I would love for y’all to make a video about that! I am an American woman and it frustrates me that there are no leading men in Western media! I hate the stereotype that Asian men can’t be attractive – I have plenty of friends who have that stereotype, and it drives me insane. Especially since the stereotype has never made sense to me in the first place – I have always found Asian men very attractive (in most cases more attractive than Western men). It’s so ingrained in some of my friends that they make fun of me or roll their eyes for finding Asian men so attractive. They mean to be playful, but the stereotype is still there and they legitimately don’t get it. It’s frustrating! I would love to see Disney put Asian actors/actresses in the leads.
