I know it can be that way in Japan to some extent as well, though it seems there's more "piling on excessive amounts of responsibility" than "doting".
Do you know if their doting moves over to grandchildren when/if they come along, or is it always a nr 1 son prioritization?

Interesting! I'm told that it's very much the same in rural China, although things are a bit different in big cities, where there are less traditional families.

You say that Hugh is quite bossy to his younger sister. How does she take it? As something normal or does she fight back? ;-) Have you ever talked about it with Hugh (as in, does he feel he has to act like this, or is it just a natural thing for him)?

That sort of surprises me cause all the korean guys I've been friends with learnt a lot of life skills in the military, even if it wasn't appropriate for them to cook at home (I think in their grandarents generation men can't enter the kitchen at all) I've always guessed a Korean man would be more likely than an Australian man to be able to sew a button back onto a shirt.. but due to culture he'll happily let his wife do it haha..

This is interesting because there is definitely a stigma against playing favorites in my corner of American culture. Not to say that it doesn't happen. If it does, it's usually at the cost of other children, not themselves. And there's generally embarrassment and denial if the parent got called out on it. Even the way we say it..."playing favorites." Seems like there might be a connection between language and culture there. Also, I think extreme favorites is exaggerated in some kids stories as a way to mark horrible people (Matilda and Harry Potter, for example).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that like in England too? When Prince William and his wife had their son, Prince George, didn't Prince Harry get knocked down a notch from his line for the throne? First born son and his heirs get the first dibs in England too. Two countries which are worlds apart but yet so similar. Interesting isn't it?

Wonder what they were like when Hugh was in Australia...and I think it's mainly first-born male syndrome, since my mom would tell me to go make my own food if I didn't want what she made for dinner (although she does ask what I want for dinner if she doesn't already have something in mind).
