90s! I remember AOL...and the annoying dial up and how we only had one desktop for the entire family to share. Now it's like everyone has desktops and laptops and multiple TVs in their homes. I can't even remember my first cassette tape but I remember my first CD was the Spice Girls. I also remember the first time I finally got cable TV and could watch MTV (Carson Daly!) and VH1 after only being able to watch the free network channels. I thought I was so lucky when I got a Sony Walkman/CD player because I could finally burn CDs.

My sister who's 7.5 years younger than me has it easy! A cell phone when she was 12 and a laptop when she was 14 and even then it's not as bad as some parents who give their kids cell phones and tablets when they're 5 years old.

Oh no! I had a friend who had her inventory robbed of a paint brush by a friend whom she shared her account password with. It was pretty dramatic :( I tried to log back on to my account a few years ago but can't remember my password or username anymore, ah maybe one day I'll register as a new player again!

Haha that's funny! My friends and I were obsessed with it. At one point my computer stopped letting me play a lot of the games on it and I didn't know why (figured it out eventually but it took about a year) so I had given my password to my friend and asked her to do some things on it for me because it wouldn't let me. She wrote it down and put it in the drawer at home. Her brother, who also liked neopets, went on my account and stole all my money :(

1. I was born in mid 90s so my earliest music group obsession came in mid 00s. It was a Taiwanese boy band called Fahrenheit. ( their name sounded much cooler in Chinese though)
2. Wu Zun! It was love at first sight :P
3. The internet mostly but I listened to the radio for interviews and information too
4. YouTube or some other online link, but that that was back when YouTube's quality setting ranged between 240-360 lol!
5. I never really got into buying posters, CDs or any other related merchandise.
6. Nope, too tech noob to know how to even do that...
7. Msn and neopets!

Thank you Nichola and Mr Gwon for making this video! Although I can't relate much to the music fan experience in the 90s, I have used cassette tapes for listening to children's songs and stories and experienced the pains of waiting for dial up internet :D

I'm so glad you mentioned neopets! I remember going to the library to play after school because I wasn't allowed much computer time at home. (I had to ask my parents' permission to use the dial up internet which also had a password that I didn't know) anyways, there were only 2-3 computers at the library that allowed games so there was usually a crowd around whoever was playing. Once I got so caught up with neopets along with some of the other kids, we got kicked out for making too much noise before my internet time was up!

Hanson was my favorite, too! MMm bop was my jam. Taylor was also my favorite member. I used to watch MTV for music information, as well as buy the magazines like teenbop, which I absolutely did buy only for the posters. I never really cared that much about the music videos, but if they were on MTV I would watch them. I remember readying my cassette tapes to press record at just the right moment to record my favorite songs off the radio. I used internet for AOL chatting and harry potter fangirling mostly (back when there were only 4 books).

Man how times have changed

Who was your favourite band/group in the 90′s? I never was a teen in the 90's, so I never had teenage obsessions with bands. However, I was a teen in the 00's, where I feel as if my experiences from then weren't that different from what you experienced in the 90's. In the 90's, I was a fan of Kinderen voor Kinderen. It is/was a choir with a lot of children and young teens in it, and they had this huge show each year. I loved them. In the early '00s, I was a fan of Gareth Gates.
Who was your favourite member? I didn't have any, I just loved all the members!
How did you get your music information? In the 90's itself, I usually got my news from the newspaper, but later from magazines like ''hitzone'' and music shows like ''Top of the Pops''
How did you see new music videos? My parents didn't allow me to watch music channels or many music shows, so I rarely saw the videos, but if I did it was on Top of the Pops. Other than that, Kinderen voor Kinderen had this yearly theater show, which I always taped on VCR and rewatched all the time.
Did you buy magazines just for posters? Oh yes. I have a bunch of posters laying around here.
Did you make mix tapes? No, it never was a big thing in my peer group. However, I did buy a lot of CD's, and copied CD's and tapes from the library so I could save them for later.
What did you use the internet for back then? Back in the 90's -or before we got off dial up internet-, my parents only allowed me to use the internet for studying if the information I needed couldn't be found in books. Back then, they only allowed me to use the computer very sparsely, like one hour a week, in the weekends. Me and my sister always got into fight about who was going to use the computer first, as we both wanted to play the same game and it took forever to start up the computer and load the game. The one who was first had to give up twenty minutes of their weekly computer hour in order to wait for everything to get ready. Once we got cable, me and my sister got to use the internet/computer more, first two hours a week and then one hour a day. I mostly used it to MSN, and looking up pictures and saving them. It took forever! I also downloaded some music, one song at a time from limewire.

oh there you go - a walkman!! :D During one of my lessons a few days ago, I used some grammar worksheet from a book from the 90s and there was a sentence with "walkman" in it... The kid was totally confused... "a walk...man? you mean... a man who is walking?" :D When I started explaining what a walkman was, his eyes got bigger and bigger :D And I thought he was about to say: "Sorry, Miss, did you also hunt dinosaurs when you were a teenager??" :D
