At least other places have some sort of resemblance to the food they are supposed to be. Apparently the people who started Outback Steakhouse didn’t even visit Australia – they didn’t want real Australian food to influence their ideas….

It’s hard to pin down Australian food. We have definite indigenous food but it’s not something people eat really. Traditionally our food is influenced by Britain and a lot of our favourites are British food. These days Australian food is just a big mix of everything. There is also a big Asian influence these days.

Outback isn’t genuine Australian food? Next you’ll tell me Happy Wok isn’t Chinese and Taco Bell isn’t Mexican. (They’re not.) What is Australian food? Do you know? If I had to name an American food, the first things I’d come up with are imports that we changed. Then it’d be s’mores and deep-fat-fried Twinkies. Oh, French fries. Actually American.

Outback Steakhouse is pretty much a total lie and not Australian at all. I’ve only seen them in the US and I’ve never had a blooming onion before.

Some small onions are used but some get thrown out aww.

Really? I thought it was an Australian thing. I’m hearing it in my head in an Australian accent. Maybe from an Outback Steakhouse commercial?
Also, what do you do with the little ones? Are they good for making something else, like the ugly strawberries?

I really want to make french onion soup! Was it good? I’ve never tried before.
