I emigrated from Korea to USA nearly 45 years ago, and “I can’t go home again.” So this topic is very close to my heart. I've heard that expatriates are treated as outsiders in Korea. I say that carefully because I've been a US citizen for a long time now, and have not returned to my motherland since then. My Korean vocabulary is limited at best, and my speech is definitely no longer native in a sense that other Koreans can easily figure out that I am not like them.

If Mr. Gwon experiences difficulty fitting back into Korean culture even after a short stint in Australia, I can not imagine what it would be like for me. While I agree that it's generally good that western counties like USA and Australia have multiculturalism, they also have some ugly things too like hatred and bigotry towards non-whites. After spending most of my life away from Korea, I've always wondered what it would be like being part of the majority. But, I quickly realize that "I can't go home again."

Koreans are definitely a unique group of people; no one else in the world shares their language or culture. I suppose some Koreans are a bit over zealous when it comes to protecting Korean culture and heritage, but maybe they're afraid to lose their unique identity.

Indeed, you've touched upon a very interesting topic of not being able to go home again for guys like me. Thanks for the insight.

I'm going to Korea in 12 days & will be staying in Gimhae for 90 days with my bf (& his mother, who I'm meeting for the very first time). (: I know that it will be strange coming home to see the way people dress because as soon as there is a bit of sun in my city everyone seems to show as much skin as possible. >.< I already know that I'm not going to want to come home, as there are so many things about England that I hate but my bf prefers my city for some strange reason. :P
