I think as parents we never fully understand how much toddlers know and can say and are constantly surprised.

Usually our son Yul doesn’t draw on walls or cupboards, but with the Covid-19 crisis we’ve been inside a lot more lately. There is only so much that we can do to occupy a toddler with unlimited energy. And he discovered he could draw with crayon on other things.

He thought it was hilarious to blame an imaginary baby, and also hilarious when I pointed out that he is indeed the baby in this household.

Baby Yul got to eat some ice cream on his birthday because he had an ice cream cake. There was some left over the next day, so Hugh gave a few mouthfuls but then didn’t let him have any more. Yul was really not happy and cried and cried. Hugh felt frustrated at Yul’s extreme reaction until I reminded him that this is literally the worst thing to ever happen to him!

Even as an adult I wouldn’t want someone to stop me from eating ice cream!

Hugh’s parents’ house is traditional in the sense that most of the living is done down on the floor, so the furniture is very low. This means so many things are in easy reach for a baby! Our apartment in Seoul is more baby proofed so we can relax a bit, but when we went back for Chuseok we had to be “on” the whole time. Yul wanted to touch EVERYTHING! Of course it was all tempting, but so many dangerous things around. Someone had to be hovering above him at all times. In comparison, Hugh’s sister has a modern apartment and it’s a lot easier when we visit her as it’s safer for Yul to crawl around.

I’ve been told that because of the low furniture in Korea parents often resort to walkers for babies to keep them contained, so they can’t reach as much, but they are frowned upon in other countries and outright banned in some as they can be dangerous. So we’ll just have to be super careful while we visit in the countryside.

But seriously, babies want to touch EVERYTHING!

It’s been a while since I’ve made a My Korean Husband comic! I have plenty of ideas, it’s just literally trying to find the time. Besides from being a mother I’ve also been busy working on two other comics series, ‘Either Way’ and ‘The Little General’.

Yul is 9 months now and is turning into a little boy, not so baby-like now. Occasionally we have the TV on and he watches a bit of Pororo or Tayo. I could hear Hugh belting out the songs and thought Yul must have been so engaged in the songs, but once I looked in the room Yul wasn’t interested in Hugh’s singing. It didn’t stop Hugh from singing along though.

I do have lots of comic ideas, which I will do later, but right now we are still in those hectic early weeks of having him home. After being in the NICU at the hospital for a month it is lovely to have him home though.

When he does like to be swaddled there can be times he squirms and then gets upset when his arms come out. We are better at swaddling now as well, it can take some practice. For the first week I think it was a bit confusing for him because he was used to the nurses in the NICU. Now he is really comfortable with us and hopefully realises we are his mummy and daddy.

Hugh’s parents have come from the countryside to see him and my parents are currently in Seoul to see him and spend time with us as well. He is the first grandchild on both sides of the family so everyone is so excited. Also he is a miracle baby. As long time followers of us know, we may not have been able to have children but with some luck and modern technology we know have this special little guy.
