They’re getting a bit closer, I think. I watched ‘When a Man Loves’ and was kind of surprised to see the female lead taking a slightly more assertive role (in that she expressed feelings for two guys and actually almost got naked with one). The unfortunate thing was that the female lead was then ‘punished’ for this and ended up in a wheelchair and in all sorts of trouble…pfft I stopped watching. It’s pretty dumb drama but it did show evidence of a slight evolution from previous passive representations of female characters. I only watched it coz the male lead is totally hot.

I don’t watch that many because I don’t really have time. Most tend to be a bit sexist in comparison to other country’s dramas simply because it’s reflecting where Korean society is in regards to those issues. Many have very similar story lines. I did really like A Gentleman’s Dignity and Secret Garden. The type of scene in Reply 1997 is annoying but it doesn’t really bother me as much because it’s written a certain way on purpose. The guy isn’t supposed to be a predator and the Korean audience knows that actually she is interested in him but they can’t have the lead female characters wanting sexual attention, so the scene has to be written with him being more aggressive. If it was in a western drama I think that is pretty clear that the guy is a jerk, but I judge Korean dramas by a different standard. It’s unfortunate though, I hope Korean society becomes less conservative and allows female characters to be normal and have normal sexual feelings and then there won’t be those annoying awkward scenes.
