These are my favorite kind of foreign country stories: the little things that nobody thinks to mention, that nobody elevates to the level of “part of the culture.” For me, the minutiae of daily life are a more striking reminder that you’re somewhere else than the stuff you expected, like the food being different.

In reply to Cassie Davis. My mother had a new bathroom installed many years back, and insisted on a bidet much to the plumbers dismay (they are tricky to plum in apparently). Has she ever used it much for it's purpose? Considering all grandkiddies refer to it as "Nanna's little sink" I think not.

Don’t you just hate it when your man comes along and shows you how to do something you’ve been struggling with for ages and shows you how easy it really was? Kinda makes you want to bang your head on the wall and feel like a bit of an idiot but you know, I hod my hand up…I am practical and good at most things but even I struggle with things that I can’t figure out sometimes.

totally agree!! plus… i always find it disturbing to sit on a warm toilet seat… eeeew. (and btw its spelt ‘bidet’ – its an adopted french word)

You know what got to me when I first moved to Korea? Toilets. No not the squatters, the transformer looking ones. The “budaes”??? I don’t even know how to spell it. But there these freaky toilets with a gazillion buttons and they squirt and swish water up your… (Hmmmmm). I mean, there are very very few of them in the USA. That’s like for super rich people. But in Korea their so common in public places. I remember my first encounter with one of these bad boys, was a… Interesting moment. (U_U)
