Haha. I've heard it was pretty bad. I've also heard that there were terrible sweaters in the drama. It is a waste when there is potentially good tension and then it just doesn't happen. It's disappointing.

The Heirs was so bad........ like Boys over flowers has all the cliches but it is enjoyable. The Heirs was just so annoying. There was no real tension and they didn't use Kim Woo Bin's character very well at all. Like... whats her face.... crying mcface.... had no interest in him even though he was aggressively acting out his feelings for her. She was just all about Lee Minho and it made it so boring. They should have made her like Kim Woo Bin for some tension.

Haha. Sometimes I wonder if I am turning into an old lady when I start to think "Oh you young people!" Haha. There is a definite decline in respect for marriage culture and I think it's not a good thing. I steered clear of The Heirs because I was fairly certain it was going to annoy me. I do love Choi Jin Hyuk, but not enough to watch all dramas he's in. Haha.

Some dramas have actually really annoyed me because of the lack of respect for marriage culture and the idea of 2 families joining. I find myself being like "you stupid young people!" *shakes fist at screen* haha. The Heirs annoyed me because he was ENGAGED and he is hanging out with her and she is letting him! Even though it wasn't a love match... it's like... the guy is still engaged!

Haha. There actually have been a few dramas where the second lead was so popular that they rewrote the script to make him the first lead. Love triangles are a pretty common trope across all cultures and types and genres of literature and film. I've also come to embrace the tropes in Korean drama when they are used well, but most of the time they aren't. And the wicked stepmother is prolific in western fairytales and storytelling as well and there is some really interesting feminist theory about why this is the case. Parental approval or disapproval as a plot device happens a lot in 18th and 19th Century English literature, and I guess it also forms a basis of a lot of TV drama where you have adolescent rebellion. It's a key plot device in many a story that I can think of. I think that parental approval is still deeply imbedded in Korean culture. I've had some conversations with Korean friends where they talk about when they get married, they're not just marrying a person, but they're marrying a family, and that makes it harder. They can't just choose a person to marry that they want to. Obviously this is not the case for everyone, but Korea is still a lot more family and community oriented than some western countries or cultures. Not all of course.

My favourite trope is actually the fake dating/marriage contract because it creates all sorts of really funny and comical situations that make a rom-com really funny.
