I came across this discussion because I was googling "do koreans use fresh towels every day". And I'm looking for that because I'm an Airbnb host in the UK and have 3 Koreans staying with me for 12 days. I provided 6 towels - 3 large, 3 medium. On the second day they asked "who will clean our towels - you or us?" to which I said "don't worry I will give you fresh towels after 6 days". After 3 days they asked again. They had been folding up the damp towels after use, rather than hanging them on hooks to dry. They then explained that they use clean fresh towels every day - I was completely astonished by this. This blog has thrown a lot of light on the situation for me! And now I understand why they always choose to use the smaller towels first!!!

After having a shower one day, I realised my towel was nowhere to be seen. I called to my wife, who said it was in the wash. I jokingly replied that I'd have to use a small hand towel instead - sometimes when I make joke statements, I follow through on them to keep people on their toes. To her surprise (and causing her to burst into laughter), I used the hand towel. I have never looked back since. I find there's no point in using a large towel anymore. Smaller towels seem to do a pretty good job, and they're easier to clean/dry. I found this page after searching google to see if anybody else does the same and it's good to see I'm not the only weirdo!

I'm British, but my wife is Japanese (she's never heard of anyone using a small towel like that though!)

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking! I went on a student exchange trip to Korea and stayed with a family in Jincheon. They handed me towels that were maybe only the size of a handtowel to dry myself with. Apparently this is a thing? Haha, great article.. Enjoy reading your blog :)

My husband prefers bigger towels but I still know plenty of Koreans who prefer smaller towels even while in Australia too :)

Since this post was made few months ago, I guess this would have a very low chance to be read but.. well Koreans use smaller towels because one(or two if you have loooong hair) towel is used for one shower, not like the Australian way that you use a huge bath towel after a shower and put it back on the towel rack for a couple more showers. This post reminded me of me visiting my husbands family for the first time. I was given a few sets of bath towels and I threw one in the laundry basket after every shower(series of VERY warm days) and created a huge load of washing just for myself within just a couple of days. Well, i have been living in Australia for 7 years but I still prefer small towels :)

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/towels/#comment-2613">Nic</a>.

I remember my year 4 schoolteacher telling our class about the Japanese exchange students they had staying with them. Provided with large towels, they'd use them once then throw them straight in the laundry, which then really piled up. I think that's the key difference - here we might use the same towel for a few days and just hang it up to dry between uses, but with a small towel you just use it once then throw it in the wash.
