Hahaha! I’m not Korean, but I’m not English native either, and I did learn to speak with Friends! (to my defense, it was back then when Friends was new)
I think I can relate, Friends was easy to understand, no peculiar accents, reasonable speech speed, good articulation, and tons of vocab in context, much more useful than what we learnt at school…

In reply to Jason Tankard. not really! think of all the awesome shows like game of thrones, breaking bad, downton abbey etc. Yeah there is a lot of reality crap but there are a lot of good tv shows as well.

if it ever turns into a ‘mine is bigger than yours’ argument you can just tell him that Jane Austin’s importance in literature is like the importance of kimchi in Korean cuisine… it is fundamental whereas friends is more like a forgotten side dish, comes back from time to time but is not so important.

I also think that depending on the person translating the shows, the meaning of certain situations are completely altered, for example i saw a lot of sex in the city korean subtitles and they were really really horrible in conveying the message across to the viewers who don;t understand ‘that’ fictional world and the social norms that apply on that show.

Maybe it would be good if u buy mr gwon korean transcripts of jane austin’s works… and have a konglish discussion on the themes and characters and such, would be interesting to see how well mr gwon absorbs them and such.

Like you said, those shows get lost in translation and I'm not exactly sure how helpful they are- I mean at least newer shows might give Koreans a better idea of current topics. But yeah, would never expect them to read Jane Austen! My husband just knows I'm a huge fan and thinks that if I like something that old, than tv shows from the 90's aren't that old in comparison.

i suppose reading Jane Austin is a different thing to watching Friends and such…. i know this is a common ‘ritual’ for a lot of Koreans in order to improve their English but i also know that a lot of the humour gets lost in translation due to the barrier of cultural differences. I don’t particularly recommend watching such things but then it is also going to be very hard to understand Jane Austin books as well…
