I am a native English speaker and I can't remember which word it was but there was a certain word which I've obviously known my whole life and knew the meaning of it. But for some reason I didn't know how to spell it, but I've also read the word a lot and knew the meaning of it. I knew the meaning of the spoken and written words and that they had the same meaning but for some reason I thought they were different words. It wasn't until I was reading something online that had that word that it finally clicked that they were the same word. I even googled it to get the pronunciation to make sure. I was shocked because it happened when I was 20 or 21 years old.

To add my mix-up story, I was playing an RPG with some friends and the GM kept mentioning the uber-scary "Bowl of the North." There had been some silly names in the game, so I really didn't think anything of it. After several weekends, I finally asked why everyone was so afraid of him, since his name wasn't that scary. Come to find out his name was "Bull" not "Bowl." I got made fun of for quite sometime for that one.
