Great post and points you make in the comments section. I have the same thoughts on using race and tags as a prop and in some cases as a way of showing off. I speak as a half-white and half-Asian female who is sick of those labels. Thank you for writing this.

Thanks for your reply Nicola. It's been about a year now and while I do still occasionally use the amwf tag I'm much more apt to using 국제커플(International Couple) tag these days. It's definitely made a difference in the type of people I've come in contact with and simplifies things a great deal. I see where you're coming from and it's a very touchy subject in any case. I hope all is well with you and your husband! Are you still in Korea? I miss it quite a bit.

I know this was posted over a year ago, but I'd like to say how much I appreciated your thoughts Nicola! I used to use the "amwf" tag on Instagram and stopped doing so because of all the reasons you've listed. It doesn't promote cultural diversity, it only excludes showing that women who aren't caucasian can't fit into this term. To me, it almost seems like "Oh look I'm a white female and I love Asian men.", using Asian men and race as a prop. And I agree with you also that it's used for photo likes and popularity. The whole "amwf" trend has become very clique-ish and is the only selling for some popular YouTube channels. May I suggest users to try other tags such as "internationalcouple" or "internationallove"? Keep it up Nic! Love your channel.

Excellent points, and ones I never considered because 1) I didn't discover that there was an AMWF tag until last February, and 2) I am an American woman and my husband is Chinese-American -- so of course it doesn't bother us when people assume I'm an American or Andy is of Chinese descent. I guess we are in the majority of the small AMWF community and never realized how annoying that might be to Koreans such as Hugh.

However, discovering the AMWF tag opened up a whole new world of blogs and bloggers and I don't regret cyber-meeting any of them. There is room for all the stories, whatever the hashtag might be.

In reply to <a href="https://www.mykoreanhusband.com/why-we-dont-label-ourselves-amwf/#comment-19538">Kate Heart</a>.

There are plenty of ways to find similar couples without using the tag though. Especially using Korean culture as a starting point to find other couples.
There is something quite problematic about using race characteristics to find other people. As white women we come from a position of privilege, while the narrative of Asian men has always been controlled and skewed by white media. We need to be very aware of our own backgrounds and histories and how that can play into our own relationships and whether we are furthering that discrimination of Asian men by inadvertently by using such hashtags. Many people who use them are not just trying to find other couples, mostly it's for clicks and likes and it's caring more about that exposure, and in some circles even showing off, than respecting a relationship.

To be honest I label photos and things online amwf mainly because I want to meet other couples like my husband and myself (a Korean man and American woman). I understand that it covers a lot more than just Korean men or American women but it's often the easiest way to find and connect with other couples like ourselves. We currently live in Korea but are moving back to U.S to an area that is not very diverse at all. I'd love to be able to meet other Korean male/American female couples so we have people to relate to culturally. Of course my husband and I are open to and do have friends of various nationalities and backgrounds, but there's just something special about meeting another couple who understands the same unique things you're going through.

Thank you. This was a most excellent post. I deal with labels all the time because people always assume I am American because I am white and speak English. It annoys me to no end because I very much culturally do NOT identify with being from the US. And also people cannot seem to fathom that a white person can be African, let alone that South Africa as a country exists. Granted, I have a really mixed up cultural viewpoint as this is the fourth continent I've lived on, and articulating who I am in is a rather complicated thing. I just wish people would stop labelling each other and work on listening to individual stories and cultural viewpoints.
