This has happened so many times both to me (I moved to Japan) and whenever I brought my Taiwanese boyfriend to meet my family. I don’t blame them for it at first, but even after I’ve explained it dozens of times, people still asking how I am doing in China really pisses me off. I agree that it is insulting to both cultures because they are so different and have such different languages. People aren’t that bad about Europe, but they tend to be ignorant about Asia and the Middle East.

That actually happens to Hispanics where I live (SoCal) a lot as well. My family is from Argentina, my husband is from Colombia, but everyone just assumes we are Mexican!

I used to be offended by these type of things, but then I realized if someone asked me about europe I wouldnt really know the difference between some of the european countries either. Ignorant yes, but its mutual.

Um, It made me really bother when I was in Europe. I passed some stores and they spoke “Ninhao (Chinese), Gonizziwa(Japanese)!! NO KOREAN!! Korea GDP is 11th ranked, Samsung Smartphone is rival of iPhone, LG, Hyundai, KIA, etc..
Well, I know all of famous cities in European countries, America, and Austraila that to me, in the end, think thoese people as stupid and non-receiving education people who are in LOW CASTE(low social position class) rather than be annoyied. We are living in 21th not Stone Age era. Ew..!! Just idiots who don’t have any common sense!

At least i know the difference now, i was so unaware… but i also tend not to watch the news ect… I only learn bits as something comes to pique my interest or i’m told. Your blog is clever and interesting and a great way to learn.

While i’m not as interested in korea as Japan, you are a friend and very entertaining, so i enjoy learning.

Wow, that is bad… I can get the slight ignorance and not knowing the difference between N and S Korea, I fell in to that category… But i know the difference between asian countries and can sort of even recognise the physical differences between people too… They are all different and unique…
BUT i know sometimes in movies there are people that look too similar and i get them confused….but that happens with both western and non western characters!

It annoys me how ignorant a lot of people are. I am going to be living in Japan soon and quite a lot of people think it is a third world country. The amount of people who has asked if I can send back pirated movies and cheap watches.
I also met a guy at a party who was from Korea, he just started introducing himself as from South Korea because every bodies question was “North or South?”

In reply to Richy27. Yup the north and south one comes up a lot. People often make a comment about the tv show MASH too. But yeah seriously, Korea is more advanced in so many ways. When my parents came with us to Korea they were so impressed. When we came back to Australia my dad was boasting to other Aussies, "In Korea they have trains this fast blah blah blah"
