Mr Gwon Recommends #5

Mr Gwon Recommends

Today Mr Gwon recommends two songs from Ahn Jae-wook.

He says:

This song is called Forever.

When we listen to the beginning of this song we feel like we are almost trembling. This song was from TV drama (Wish Upon a Star), Ahn Jaw-wook played a singer in the drama. This song and the character was so popular. Because we remember the scene from the drama, and he was a really cool guy – so he was a sensation at that time. I think I was a middle high school student at that time. Everyone wanted to have hair like that and styled their hair like that way. We want to be like him. The song is about loving someone forever and when we listen to the song, we can feel the sorrow. He can sing so emotionally and people can feel the emotion in the song. In the drama, he can’t get the girl but he knows he will always love her. But in the end he finally got the girl.

So even though the song was 10 years ago, when we listen to this song it reminds us of that time in our lives. It’s funny looking back now, how we wanted to be like him. We wanted to be cool like that. I want to share this song with other people because it’s one of my favourite songs.

He says:

This song is called Friend.

When we listen to this song or sing it, we are reminded about our friendships. We think about our friends and the time we spent together. When a friend has a bad or sad situation we comforted them and when we have good news, we were happy together. Every time we hang out and drink, when we go to noraebang, we always sing this song when drunk and hug each other. We think aobut how important our friendship is. Actually I lost two of my friends… they died. One in highschool and one about 4 or 5 year ago. So this song makes me remember our good memories. I even remember singing this song with one of my friends before he died. I think other people who have good friends, they might like this song, if they know the lyrics, so I want to recommend this song. I recommend songs like this because I like them, not because they were the best song ever or the top of charts, I like it so I think someone else will like this song as well.

I think it’s probably obvious what is different in the picture this time. Let me in Mr Gwon!

Deliberately Awkward

deliberately awkward

Quick comic with just me in it (then a new Mr Gwon Recommends will be up later).

Even being married I can sometimes be like, “Go away couples!” I think maybe a lot of people are feeling that with Valentine’s Day coming up?

I was rewarding myself with bad food the other day because it was quite stressful dealing with website issues. It was amazing having so much traffic but frustrating dealing with the web hosting company who took my site down because of the traffic. So during that time I went and sat by the water to relax. I’m sure it was totally annoying for the couple but I can be deliberately awkward like that. hehe. I really wanted to sit in that place.

Wrist Grab

Wrist Grab

Yes, the Korean guy wrist grab thing again. It doesn’t just happen in Korean dramas, it happens in real life too. It does annoy me a bit so I grabbed his wrist and dragged him to show him what it’s like but he thwarted me by claiming he likes it! He may be lying…

What do you think?

Naver

The other day I was contacted by a journalist from Yonhap news wanting to ask me some questions for an article about my blog. I had no idea that the article would be put on Naver and other Korean sites!

We woke up this morning to messages from Korean friends saying that they saw the article about us. This site got so much traffic that it crashed….twice! The response has been really positive though and although it’s been an unusual day I’m really thankful to the Korean sites that put the article on there.

Thank you so much for everyone who visited my blog today and a big thank you to Mihye Ko for interviewing me and writing the article.

Here is the article.

I will continue working hard and producing comics every day. In April we will be starting our Youtube channel and will be doing videos as well.

For those who would like to read it in English… my husband hates translating so not sure he will do it! But I have the original questions I answered in English. If people would like to read my answers.

Rockpools at Night

Rockpools at Night

This was over Christmas when we stayed in a holiday house near the beach. Whenever we were walking on the beach my husband would ask, “Can we eat it?” for almost everything he saw. My family goes to the beach and enjoys swimming and relaxing, but my husband sees it as an opportunity to find food. His attempt at catching squid was unsuccessful because the ocean was too rough, but we did see others catch a lot a few days earlier, so maybe next time.

We had a really fun time looking in rock pools though, especially at night. The octopus freaked us out. Well, freaked me out. I have this half joking fear that giant octopuses will one day take over the world. This is why I don’t eat baby octopuses in Korean seafood hotpot because when octopuses take over the world I’m going to be like “I didn’t eat your babies! Don’t kill me!” All my friends know my theory and laugh at me. So I was a bit scared when my husband caught the octopus in the bucket. Which a bit out of character for me, I’m not scared of animals and I’m trained as a zoo keeper so I’ve handled plenty of animals. Octopus though…. they are just so smart. This octopus we caught was easily crawling out of the bucket, and when we put it back it changed it’s colour to match the rocks in the rockpool. Freaky.

My husband was sad he couldn’t eat it and we really had to force him to put it back. Even though I’ve explained that you can’t just take everything from the environment, sometimes he thinks with his stomach. We were also lucky that it wasn’t a Blue-ringed Octopus which are deadly.

Anyway, go watch some Youtube videos about octopus and see how smart they are.

Naver Stop

Naver Stop

If you weren’t aware, Naver is the search portal most South Koreans use. Which is why a lot of Koreans look at me oddly when I say “Google it” or “I was googling….” Koreans also watch a lot of videos on Naver so Youtube videos of Kpop groups on Youtube are not always representative of what is actually popular in Korea.

Anyway, my husband has been giggling lately at Koreans thinking that “naver” is how “never” is spelled. A Korean soccer player also did it on Cyworld (yet another just Korean thing) and wrote “naver stop” instead of “never stop”. I think my husband thinks it’s funny because they must think that the big website they all use means “never” in English.

Kakao Story is connected to Kakao Talk (instant messaging service on phones) which is Korean but anyone can use it. My husband is always on there. I don’t use it though because I have to manage so many social networks for this blog, I don’t need another one!
