Secret Weddings?

Chloe and I talk about the reality of why you might have a secret wedding if you marry a Korean.

We talked a little bit in the video about friends reactions and as Chloe said, questions about proposals and diamond rings, but I think people really don’t realise how hurtful some comments can be. Especially in western culture, we get so hung up on this idea of when the marriage started on paper that people can say some things without realising how frustrating and hurtful that can be. I’ve had extended family members try to insist that my office registry wedding was my only real wedding. That type of thinking really casts a shadow on the actual weddings we want to share with family and friends and are just inappropriate, because actually it’s our relationship and we get to choose when we publicly commit ourselves to each other. When people are forced by necessity to marry in a government office, others shouldn’t try to lessen that just because it’s not how they expect a marriage to start. From what I’ve seen from other international couples we know, is that regardless of how the marriage started or if there had to be a secret office registry wedding, they are all happy with the choices they made.

Guessing New English Slang

We cut this video down a lot, and we also talked more about BAE and how the meaning has also changed to also just things that we like as well. Like some people say “OMG that cupcake is so bae!”. We also mentioned how the “before anyone else” meaning is probably an origin myth and made up after it was first used. Probably it just came from “baby”.  We have previously talked in a video about what BAE actually means in Korean.

A lot of these words my friends (who are my age) didn’t know at all. The copious amounts of time I spent on the internet are the only reason why I know these.

Boarding Pass

Boarding Pass

This is a redo of a very very early comic, before I even had a tablet. Sometimes flight attendants can have trouble with Korean names, but it seems they have some tactics to avoid having to say the name. Fantastic!

What is life? Collab with Kkebong

Kkebong has some Korean internet fame because of funny photos of him desperately wanting the human food on the table. Click here for Korean site. Click here for my Tumblr post.

Kkebong actually belongs to Hugh’s sister’s sister in law so we have visited them in Busan before. We were hoping to make a cute video of him looking at food, but when we looked at our footage we ended up with this video instead… haha. Also because Hugh is sick at the moment, we needed to make a short video as we can’t work on our long videos at the moment.

Hello GD?

This is a redo of an earlier comic about when we first met.

Hello GD

Yes, he used this G-Dragon line on me when we first met. Still haven’t met GD and it’s 5 years later! I thought it was appropriate to share this one again since BIGBANG are currently in Australia now! Ironically I’m in Korea…

Hope everyone has a great time at the BIGBANG concerts!

(Technically he is related to GD but distantly).

Boys Late

Sometimes in our videos we show other couples like Han and Sophie, and Daniel and Chloe, this comic features both of them:

Boys Late

Korea has such a late night drinking culture! This can be really frustrating if you don’t want to go out late or can’t. There are so many factors like who they are with, if there are hyungs (older friends) there, if the drinking is to do with work or if it’s friends they rarely see. All these things can cause late nights. The concept of what is late can differ from what you are used to as well. Many many people stay out until the sun is coming up. Hugh in particular, is such a social butterfly while I’d rather stay in. This comic was actually something that happened last year with all our friends, I vaguely remember it being put on social media as well. The boys made sure we weren’t too annoyed at them staying out late by wearing ahjumma pants (floral pants favoured by middle aged women).

Where to see Korean Dramas being filmed

Korean dramas are watched by people all around the world. They can be so addicting! If you are visiting Korea and really want to get a glimpse of one being filmed we recommend going to Sangam DMC in Seoul. This is where all the big networks are and they often use the surrounding area for filming. Scenes that are supposed to be set in the evening are often filmed at 2am on the empty streets. But we’ve seen plenty of scenes filmed around 10 or 11pm. Many car scenes are filmed at night, but we caught one being filmed during the middle of the day. Because Korean dramas are filmed so quickly and the show starts being shown on TV before the filming is even finished, you may actually catch one you are currently watching being filmed.
